Is Our Country Totally F****d
Looking at lots of streams on here recently there seems an understanding that we, as a nation, have to put others, ethnic, religious or whatever in front of us.

My step daughters nan (aged 57) had to move out of her family home of approx. 30 years due to the bedroom tax (the spare 2 spare rooms were for when the parents and grandchildren visited every weekend and also for looking after kids during school hols)

The house that she had to leave is now occupied by newly arrived immigrants.

Is this what we want for our own???

That "support the ageing population" type of argument is generally put forward by people with a lesser degree in Impressing-the-Prols, and feel anybody with a poorer qualification is incapable of using the internet, extracting and understanding information and working things out for themselves.

People are people and they ALL use resources ALL their lives. Race or colour doesn't even enter the equation.

The "we need it because of aging population" argument is short termism that makes no sense to me.

Import immigrants because we have an aging population. Those immigrants plus the native population then all grow old. We are left with an even bigger aging population, an even worse position than we started in.

In future years do we import 3 times the amount of immigrants to deal with an the bigger aging population?

Where is the room and houses and Hospitals and infrastructure (already at breaking point) for all these people coming from?

Not too far from the mark at all, Sir Alf.

Yeah Monk. Agree about the financial services is everything strategy since the 1980s. Short term thinking in the extreme.

House of cards will come crashing down its inevitable :-( Less of an issue for old twats like me but I worry for my kids and grandkids.

Indeed it is an ageing population with a pension (and other benefits) that is paid directly out of tax revenues that is the problem, Alf. Immigration is used to top up the working population.

I still believe that the policy of allowing/ encouraging manufacturing capability to go overseas on the basis of a golden future in financial services was a huge mistake. Almost impossible to recover from this. Apart from a few niche areas there are no competitive sought after products in foreign markets.

The keep on borrowing solution ain't going to last forever.

Re: Is Our Country Totally F****d
Thats what I would like to see Monk tbh. But that would mean that the working population would need to support the ageing population so comes back to wealth distribution, inequality gaps, the ability to make and export goods of substance, not just services. It all starts with education improvement and a 20 - 30 year journey. Scandanavia economies seem to have a better balance of capitalism and socialism (wealth distribution and gaps in income far less from top to bottom) and while they no doubt have some issues, the model of lower populations with higher living standards seems a better one. Not sure how we could go in that direction now though.

At least we always have our drinking culture and pubs to fall back on so long as they are not taxed out of existence :-)

Sir Alf

The total fertility rate in the UK is 1.85 children per woman and thus a reducing population outside of migration.

Re: Is Our Country Totally F****d
Too many people on this island, we don't produce anything of substance on a grand scale outside of financial services and rely on large scale borrowing to keep the whole ponzi scheme going.

We do not place education at the top of our priorities and have a generation or two who have been indoctrinated by the bad side of consumerism / free market capitalism which tends to create an entitlement culture.

On top of all this, our history of imperialism and slavery which built the riches of the empire and our position in the modern world, is coming back to bite us as we seemed to have an open door attitude from the commonwealth days that continued into the interconnected world we know live in.

When will someone have the courage to point out that multiculturalism does not work when the cultures are too far apart. Values, religious underpinnings, rituals, superstitions, habits that are too different means sub cultures, resentment and fear. I mean 2 or 3 tribes that are supposedly close in culture in the middle east are still at odds after 10000 years. And on top of all that, look at nature and other species. Bees for example, one hive cannot mix with another.

Finally, the ratio of resources to people. 50 odd million when I was born and now approaching 70 with 80 million predicted. Over the last 20 years we are at the top of the immigration league and birth rates are outpacing death rates largely because of babies born to mothers not born here.

We are full.

Yes our country is well on the way to being totally fvcked.

My mums on one and is perfectly fine with it. The bit i didn't like was the exclusivity cause, it's not very free market for the employer to stop the employee from working elsewhere so once the rule was changed I no longer had an issue.

So it will be in someone's manifesto at the next election.

People are not being taxed for spare rooms.

The government is simply saying if you are in a council house you should have the same rules as social housing that you have to pay for a spare room.Rules by the way the nice cuddly understanding "peoples party " introduced.

As with every rule change there's going to be people upset or missing out.

I know as I'm thinking of letting mine out if I move abroad. Let them pay my mortgage as well as keep me in beer.

Private renting out is getting harder and harder as councils bring in licensing. Even worse if it's HMO.

Loads of hoops to jump through plus fees.

20 grand fine if you don't comply.

.... and don't get me started on some of the tennants encountered.

Re: Is Our Country Totally F****d
Boltkunt, why didn't she buy the house when she had the opportunity then? That way, she would own it and be exempt from bedroom tax.

If she really does have to stay at a house far too big for her, the council should move a family in with her so that when she dies, their children can move into her room.
